Pirate English on Facebook
September 24, 2008
Those crazy kids over at Facebook have added a new and unique language setting to Facebook.
English (Pirate) is now an available language and it switches most of the text on Facebook to Piratespeak (if that is an acceptable name for it). An example would be “Applications” is now “Arrplications”, or “Invite Your Friends” is “Invite ye mateys!” and it goes on and on.
How do you change it to Piratespeak? It’s easy! Logon to Facebook as you normally would and scroll all the way down to the bottom and you will see “English” with an up and down arrow next to it. Click on the arrows and scroll to English (Pirate) and select it. I have included a screenshot for you below. I have also added another screenshot with some of the changes.
Everything About A Website
September 23, 2008
I stumbled across Quarkbase today and I thought it was a really interesting site. It is especially interesting if you are a blogger or a webmaster like me.
Quarkbase is a simlpe and novel idea. Just enter a website that own or that you are interested in and let Quarkbase go to work. If it is the first time that Quarkbase has seen this site it can take about 30 seconds to gather all of the data.
Today, I entered my site Slave To the Internet to see what information it would gather. And I have to say I’m pretty impressed!
Quarkbase told me how many times my site has been Dugg, the number of pages on Reddit and de.licio.us, my Technorati blog reactions, popular pages, subscriber count, which countries my blog is famous in and a heap more.
Definitely have a look at Quarkbase. It’s fun! After gloating about Slave To the Internet I played around with it for a bit longer and had a look at some of the web’s most popular sites.
Here’s what I found: Google, Yahoo, ProBlogger, IMDb, Alexa, Facebook
16 Awesome Screensavers
September 22, 2008
Our monitors may not really need screensavers anymore and screen burn is a thing of the past with the latest style of monitors, but some people still like them. Personally, I love them! I think they are great, so I thought I would share some of the best ones with you.
I hope you like them.
POLARCLOCK
I have to start with Polar Clock. This is my favorite screensaver. This is version number 3 and it just keeps getting better and better. Its colorful and interesting.
Windows & MAC.
FLYING TOASTERS
I remember when I got my first screensaver. It was the flying toasters screensaver pack called After Dark. I think it was made by Berkely Systems or something like that. Anyway, there was a heap of screensavers on there and Flying Toasters was one of them.
Windows & MAC.
DROPCLOCK
Every time the time changes a new numbers slowly drops into a large pool of water. Very sexy.
Windows & MAC.
FAAR CLOCK
A giant Analog clock that looks fanastic, and it tells you the time!
Windows Only.
TWINGLY
Using RSS Feeds from blogs around the world, Twingly plots where the activity is happening on a spinning globe. Its a large screensaver and likes to eat CPU.
Windows Only.
FLIP CLOCK
Yep it’s another clock screensaver. What can I say? I guess I like clock screensavers. This one looks like one of those old fashioned flip clocks that used to be next to your bed in the 80’s.
Windows & MAC.
BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH
Would you call me a liar if I told you that this screensaver has actually been made by Microsoft? Go ahead, click the link and you will be taken to the Microsoft website! This Microsoft screensaver cycles between different Blue Screens and simulated boots every 15 seconds or so. Virtually all the information shown on Bluescreen’s BSOD and system start screen is obtained from your system configuration!
Windows Only.
HOLDING PATTERN
Holding Pattern turns your idle computer screen into an airplane window, complete with a moving aerial view. Each time the screensaver plays a unique sequence.
Windows & MAC.
HAND WRITTEN CLOCK
Before you groan, yes I am aware that I have added another clock to this list and I’m sorry. But clock screensavers have double the value of other screensavers. Firstly, its a screensaver and secondly, its a clock. This one is cool because the numbers are handwritten, with a hand coming in each time to write the new number. This includes seconds!
Windows Only.
ELECTRIC SHEEP
Now this is one cool screensaver. It is actually open source and thousands of people have contributed to it. How do they contribute? Well, when their computers “sleep”, the screen saver comes on and the computers communicate with each other by the internet to share the work of creating morphing abstract animations known as “sheep”. Its fantastic.
Windows, MAC & Linux.
FIRE
This one is cool. Its sets your desktop on fire. Each and every item on your desktop - including icons and all open windows will appear to catch on fire, glowing and emitting a smoke. If you have your sound on, the fire will even crackle and pop.
Windows Only.
DANCING JAPANESE GIRLS
This one is a little weird. Its a clock, that flick to a group of Japanese girls dancing, then flicks back to a clock. If dancing Japanese girls and clocks are your thing, then this combines into the perfect screensaver for you. I have to admit, I do find it mesmerising. Just click on the menu button on the left hand side to get to the download screen.
Windows, MAC & Mobile if you live in Japan.
DIGG
All of the products from Digg Labs are now available as screensavers. My favorite is Stack, but you can also download BigSpy, Swarm and Arc.
Windows & MAC.
STAR TREK SYSTEM 47
This one is for all the nerds who love Star Trek. Personally, Im a Star Wars fan, but I do like this screensaver. It turns your desktop into the library system from Star Trek. It will runs scans of the universe and the Enterprise.
Windows & MAC.
FIREFLIES
This one is just too pretty to leave out. Probably my second favorite from this list.
Windows, MAC & Linux.
SOUNDSTREAM
Soundstream is a Mac OS X screensaver that responds to sound input. Its colorful Flurry-like streams pulse to the beat of music or bloom with ambient noise. Very creative!
MAC Only

Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld Commercial #2
September 20, 2008
Microsoft have launched a new series of commercials starring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld. Microsoft are using the ads to combat against Apple’s Mac vs PC ads.
This ad is the second in the series and comes in at just over 4 minutes. Pretty funny in spots. Enjoy
Death Magnetic by Metallica
September 18, 2008
Possibly one of the most influential bands to exist, Metallica are back with their 9th studio album, Death Magnetic. Word on the net is that this album was leaked to the internet by the band before it’s official release. This really surprises me, especially after the Metallica / Napster controversy several years ago. If you don’t remember, Metallica basically had Napster shut down. Some of you younger ones may not even know Napster back when it was the king of file sharing. Napster was what started it all. Metallica didn’t like it and they came after Napster and everyone who used Napster. It got pretty ugly.
However, this is all in the past now and Metallica have decided that the internet is something that is going to work for them rather than against them. The new album is produced by legendary producer Rick Rubin and is an excellent album. It’s almost old school Metallica with a bit of a new flavor. Old fans will love it and new fans will enjoy it.
